The Monster Times: Nosferatu- Whatever Happened to the Vampyr?

In recent years thanks to a glut of new properties like True Blood and (shudder) Twilight, there has been quite the renaissance of the vampire. While both titles might bring new fans into the blood sucker fold, there are plenty of long time horror fans that don't like the current popular representations of the children of the night.It stands to reason though that fanboys will always complain about whatever is the new hotness. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that the first article to ever appear in The Monster Times was one detailing this very same feeling. In 1972 when The Monster Times published this debut issue, Christopher Lee might have been the reigning Count, but as far as some were concerned, he was no Bela and certainly no Max Schreck.

    Christopher Lee is rubbish because he is British and F.W. Murnau was garbage because he was a faggot.

    Aside from some of the true classics, I have little patience for bloodsucker movies. 90% of the time, vampires are sorta treated like the "Barbie" dolls of horror - they're mostly made to amuse the squeamish-but-curious girls, while dudes & hardcore female fans go off and have fun with REAL horror shit.

    Perhaps Murnau, Shreck and the original ultra-ghastly concept of the Vampyr were a little too good... because there was nowhere to go but down from there.

    Just with regards to a specific vampire movie for a mogirlt, i`ve always thought that "NEAR DARK" (1987) was ludicrously over-rated hogwash, the only good thing about it was Jeanette Goldstein "VASKY..VASKY" what a gorgeous little darlin` she was back in the `80s.
